Vickie’s Blog : Selfcare

Hello Everyone,

I hope you’re having a good October so far and are staying safe. Over the last few weeks I’ve been busy making changes to all ages Keep You Head website based on the feedback you gave us so we can make the site even better for those who need it. I’ve also been spending some time working on my assignments for my apprenticeship, getting to learn new things all the time is really rewarding. Another part of my job that I find rewarding is being able to share involvement opportunities with everyone, so you can have your voice heard.

Speaking of sharing opportunities, this weekend was World Mental Health Day; so I thought for my blog week I would talk about the different opportunities you can have to practice selfcare. When you’re struggling with your mental health, even the smallest act of selfcare can make a difference to how you feel.

There are several of opportunities to practice selfcare throughout the day, for example:

  • Mindfulness – taking 5 or 10 minutes out of the day to make yourself a cup of tea
  • Simply brushing your teeth and/or taking a shower
  • Making your bed
  • Looking after pets
  • Looking after plants
  • Putting on your favourite outfit
  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Moving your body – no matter how small the activity
  • Doing some hobbies
  • Meditating

One of my favourite forms of selfcare is looking after my indoor plants, because it allows me to spend some time being mindful and I find it helpful for calming anxiety. It also gives me a lovely sense of achievement when I see them grow and I need to move them to bigger pots! Here’s some of my many plants, featuring some Halloween tinsel!

Another reason why I find looking after plants great for my mental health is that, like looking after pets, they rely on you to feed and look after them; so on days where you are struggling to look after yourself, you have something else to focus your energy on.

I also use several mental health apps so manage my wellbeing. If you’re looking for some more ways you can look after your wellbeing you can check out Keep Your Head for self-help ideas and for where you can go for support!

Have a great week everyone and stay safe!
